While common wisdom states that it's never too early to start reading to your child, our personal opinion is that prior to six months old, reading books to an infant does more for the parent than the child. Babies at that age can't really focus all that well on specific objects, let alone printed images or words, so we'd suggest that parents instead sing to infants under six months to expose them to more vocabulary. Our Reading Time Buyer's Guides therefore start with the 6-12 month age range, where children can quickly pick up a healthy appetite for books. And we mean that in more than one way: not only do they love listening to books and flipping pages, they also literally like eating books, especially the bindings! For that reason, we suggest all parents have at least a few board books on hand, which will stand up a bit better to being chewed on!
